Ed’s
parents were both professional musicians and influenced
him greatly. There was childhood formal choral and piano
training. He took up guitar at age 12 and was in his first
rock band by age 17 heavily influenced by Chicago blues
bands. On to college and the start of 12 years as a professional
musician… playing guitar and singing in college coffee
houses and independent venues from Portland, Oregon to Minneapolis
to Chicago where he played at The Bulls and the Kingston
Mines. Ed recorded the set-change music and performed a
major role in the Richardson and Berny play, “The
Dark of The Moon”. Seven years in a choir, six years
in a long running musical, live radio shows in the late
70’s, performing on the same bill as Claudia Schmidt
and Larry Long in Minnesota, and, hey, the only folk singer
to ever be on the same bill as Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Heavily
influenced by the Minnesota music scene, all this culminated
in the recording of his first album, “Light Years
Away” in 1978, and his second album, “Lunar
Blues”, in 1982. These recordings include a fantastic
array of Minnesota musicians: Dan Lund (Podipto, The Sky
Blue Water Boys, Prairie Home Companion), Jack Sundrud (Podipto,
Great Plains, and Poco), and Paulette Carlson (Highway 101).
Touring behind these albums Ed sold them out and was just
about to enter the studio again when his life took an odd
and sudden turn. Solo duty as a dad and becoming a doctor
of chiropractic consumed most of his time and energy. Many
years of writing over 100 songs, some studio work, performing
at a few benefits, sneaking music in how and when he could.
Until now. Daughters in college, successful chiropractic
clinic, Ed asked himself ‘now where was I?’,
and replied, ‘oh yeah, music’. Inspired by New
York musician, Lucy Kaplansky, who encouraged his return
to music…
Strongly
influenced by artists such as Dar Williams and Greg Brown,
Ed has settled into his own brand of quirky music. There
is now a new recording, his self-titled third album, on
A&R Records, Evergreen Center Production, recorded at
Arabica Studio and MPR’s Studio M. Dan Lund, Dakota
Dave Hull, and others back Ed up who plays guitar, piano
and acoustic bass. Cello, saxophone and percussion also
make appearances. All adding to the strongest collection
of songs Ed has ever written. Progressive folk and very
intricate folksy blues... Words that mean something and
guitar work that makes other players listen. A concert is
a personal trip exploring things that we all think and feel,
but believe are unique to ourselves. It is a healing process
laced with political commentary and weird humor... enjoy!
